Bauernherbst
According to old tradition, the harvesting season in October is especially celebrated. Thanksgiving for the harvest includes a festive procession with the beautifully decorated harvest crown. Living traditions such as traditional crafts can be admired at many of the festivals during the Bauernherbst season. Have you ever watched wooden shingle making, quill embroidery, or alpine wreath binding?
The Bauernherbst is celebrated during harvest time with over 2,000 events across Salzburg. Tradition, customs, and old crafts are brought to life anew.
Hike from one alpine hut to the next and experience one of the cheerful Almabtriebe (cattle drives). Or cycle along Salzburg’s scenic bike routes to the many Bauernherbst locations, including festivals and farmers’ markets. At the end of a happy summer on the alpine pastures, usually in late September, cows are festively adorned with flowers and driven back to their farms. And of course, there’s plenty of singing, music, dancing, and Schuhplatteln (traditional folk dancing)! Bauernherbst is all about customs, music, and joy—lived and celebrated. And don’t miss the many culinary delights like Germkrapfen (yeast pastries), Bauernschöpsernes (traditional lamb dish), or Blattln (fried dough). The whole village takes part—let yourself be swept up in the cheerful atmosphere and join the celebration!
